Statement on Myanmar earthquake

3 April 2025

On Friday, 28 March, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.7 in magnitude struck central Myanmar. The initial earthquake, with an epicentre northwest of Sagaing, has been followed by reports of up to 264 aftershocks along the Sagaing fault.

At this stage, we know that thousands have lost their lives, are missing, or are trapped beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings and infrastructure. Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET) is working closely with partners in Myanmar and in the UK through the Health Partnerships for Myanmar community, to understand the full extent of the damage and to support health workers in Myanmar at this time.

This earthquake has placed an enormous strain on a health system which has been systematically targeted and attacked by the military junta since the coup of 1 February 2021.

Despite the devastation caused by the earthquake, the brutality of the military council has continued with reports of up to 20 separate attacks by the junta following the earthquake, resulting in at least 12 fatalities. Specific incidents include an airstrike by five military aircraft on the Danu People’s Liberation Army base in Naungcho township, northern Shan state, shortly after the earthquake which killed seven. The junta has also conducted airstrikes in Pauk Township, Sagaing Region, and Singu Township, Mandalay, on 31 March, injuring several residents and destroying homes.

Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET) condemns the actions of the military junta in attacking health professionals and its own civilians.

We welcome the additional aid funding announced by the UK Government to support the humanitarian response to the earthquake. It is imperative that the UK Government, international partners, and aid agencies ensure all humanitarian assistance reaches communities affected by the earthquake through safe routes and is not obstructed by the junta.
